Rowy

Rowy solves a specific architectural pain with unusual elegance: your team needs a spreadsheet-friendly backend, and Firebase Firestore is powerful but hostile to non-developers. Rowy sits on top of Firestore as an open-source admin UI — a spreadsheet-like interface where content editors, support staff, and PMs manage production data directly, while developers keep everything that matters: schema in TypeScript, cloud functions in code, and permissions enforced below the UI layer. The data never leaves your Firebase project; Rowy is the window, not the house.

The developer-experience details show genuine production lineage: table-level field types (images, references, JSON, select) rendered with appropriate editors, bulk import/export including CSV round-trips, a JS playground for batch data operations, and — the feature teams adopt for — cloud functions managed in the same UI with full deploy pipeline, so the CMS and its automation live together. In our test build, a content team was safely editing a production database within an hour of setup, with validation logic preventing the disasters direct Firestore access usually invites.

Honest limits: it is Firestore-specific — MongoDB or Postgres teams need other tools; the open-source core's hosting setup requires some technical comfort (or Rowy's cloud offering); and very complex relational reporting exceeds what a document-store UI can offer. Free and open-source (Apache 2.0) for the core, with paid options for managed hosting.
