n8n is the automation tool we reach for when Zapier stops being enough but a custom codebase would be overkill. The pitch is simple: a fair-code, self-hostable workflow builder where every node is also JavaScript if you need it to be. You wire triggers to actions visually — a webhook fires, data gets transformed, an AI model summarizes it, results land in a spreadsheet and a Slack channel — and when the visual model runs out of expressiveness, you drop a Code node and write exactly the logic you need.

The AI-era additions are what make n8n genuinely interesting in 2026. Native LangChain nodes let you chain LLM calls, embed documents into vector stores, and build retrieval pipelines without leaving the canvas, and the community ships new integration nodes at a pace proprietary competitors cannot match. Self-hosting on a small VPS costs a few dollars a month and removes the per-execution pricing anxiety entirely — power users report running tens of thousands of executions for the price of a single Zapier tier.

The tradeoff is operational responsibility. You own the updates, the backups, and the debugging, and the UI, while much improved, still assumes some technical comfort. Cloud hosting exists for teams who want n8n without the DevOps. Our verdict: if your automations are simple and your volume is low, stay with Zapier. The moment your workflows involve AI steps, custom logic, or high execution counts, n8n pays for the extra complexity many times over.
