Lemon Squeezy is the merchant of record platform that solves software commerce's most annoying problem in one stroke: selling globally means being the tax collector for every jurisdiction on Earth, unless someone else is. As your merchant of record, Lemon Squeezy legally sells your product to your customers — handling VAT, sales tax, invoicing, and compliance across the world — while you receive clean payouts and get back to building. For indie developers and SaaS founders, this removes an entire category of accountant anxiety that Stripe technically leaves in your lap.

The platform underneath is genuinely complete: hosted checkout and payment links, subscription management with dunning and upgrades, license key generation and validation for desktop software, a digital delivery system for e-books and assets, discounting, and an API plus webhooks for custom integration. Our evaluation focused on setup speed: a digital product went from zero to sellable in under an hour including product page, taxes, and delivery — a process that historically consumed a weekend of configuration.

The honest tradeoffs: merchant-of-record convenience costs a meaningful percentage (~5% + 50¢), higher than bare Stripe, and customization of checkout is more constrained. There is also strategic context — Stripe acquired Lemon Squeezy, so long-term roadmap independence is a reasonable question to ask. But for solo developers, small software teams, and anyone selling digital goods across borders without a finance department, the premium is transparently priced relief. It is the fastest legitimate path from 'I made a thing' to 'people can pay me for it.'
