Suno generates complete songs — vocals, instrumentation, and structure — from a text prompt or lyrics, and the leap in coherence from earlier AI music tools is immediately noticeable. We tested it with a prompt specifying genre, mood, and a set of lyrics, and it produced a structured track (verse, chorus, bridge) with vocals that stayed on-key and in rhythm throughout, rather than the disjointed, drifting quality that plagued earlier-generation music generators.

The 'Custom Mode,' which lets you supply your own lyrics and control structure explicitly rather than relying entirely on a prompt, is the feature that makes it useful beyond novelty — songwriters can generate a working demo of an idea in minutes to test how lyrics and melody actually sit together, without needing to record anything themselves first. Genre versatility is also genuinely broad; the same lyrical content produced convincingly different results across acoustic, electronic, and hip-hop style prompts in our testing.

The clear limitations are around fine control and rights: you can't precisely control a specific vocal performance the way a human singer or producer could (phrasing, exact emotional delivery), and output quality on longer, more complex compositions is less consistent than short 2-3 minute tracks. Commercial use rights also depend entirely on your subscription tier — free-tier generations typically carry more restrictive usage rights than paid plans, so anything intended for commercial release needs the rights checked carefully first. For quickly demoing a song idea or generating background music for content, Suno is a genuinely useful tool; for a final, polished commercial release, most users still bring in human production for mixing and mastering afterward.
