The concept behind Descript sounds almost too good to be true: edit audio and video by editing a text transcript. I imported a 45-minute podcast recording, and sure enough, the auto-transcription appeared within minutes. Deleting a paragraph in the transcript cut that exact segment from the audio waveform. Hitting "Remove Filler Words" scrubbed 147 instances of "um," "uh," and "you know" from the recording in about 5 seconds. This one feature alone saves me 30-40 minutes per podcast episode compared to manual editing in Audacity. The AI voice clone feature, called Overdub, lets you type text and have it spoken in your own voice. I trained it on a 10-minute sample and the cloned voice captured my tone and pacing about 80% accurately — good enough for correcting a mispronounced word, not good enough to generate entire new passages. Where Descript struggles is performance. Editing a 60-minute video with multiple tracks pushed my laptop's 16GB RAM to its limits. The video editing features still lack the precision of dedicated tools like Premiere Pro. The $24/month Creator plan is the real entry point, and at that price, it replaces Otter.ai while adding features no traditional editor can match. For podcasters and video creators who hate timeline-based editing, Descript is transformative.
