Runway has positioned itself as a genuinely professional video-generation and editing platform rather than a novelty text-to-video toy, and that shows in the feature set. Gen-3 (and later models) produce noticeably more coherent motion and fewer of the warped, melting artifacts that plague earlier AI video tools, especially in shots with clear camera movement. We tested a text-to-video prompt describing a moving camera panning across a landscape, and the physical consistency of the scene held up far better than we expected from a first-generation clip.

Beyond generation, Runway's editing toolkit is what separates it from single-purpose generators: Motion Brush lets you selectively animate specific parts of an image, and features like inpainting and green-screen removal mean the output of a generation can actually be refined into something usable, rather than treated as a final, unchangeable clip. This editing-first approach makes Runway genuinely useful for professional workflows — short film previsualization, ad concepts, and social content — not just experimentation.

The clear limitation is clip length and cost: individual generations are still limited to a handful of seconds each, meaning longer sequences require stitching multiple generations together, and credits burn quickly at higher resolutions or with repeated re-generation to get a usable result. Physical accuracy also still breaks down in complex scenes with multiple interacting objects or detailed hand movement. For short-form video content, concept previsualization, and social clips, Runway is one of the strongest tools available; for a single, long, narratively continuous scene, it currently requires significant manual stitching and patience.
