Flux from Black Forest Labs is the image model that professionals name when they stop talking about consumer tools. Built by the original Stable Diffusion researchers after they left Stability AI, the Flux family — Schnell for speed, Dev for quality work, Pro via API — delivers what its lineage promised: prompt adherence that actually respects composition, text rendering legible enough for posters and thumbnails, and anatomy that no longer collapses at hands and faces. In our side-by-side tests, Flux handled multi-object prompts with specified positions ('a red teapot left of a stack of books') that Midjourney regularly ignored, and its typography survived where DALL-E 3 still garbles longer phrases.

The open-weights releases are the strategic story. Dev and Schnell run locally on a consumer GPU, which has made them the backbone of ComfyUI pipelines, LoRA fine-tuning ecosystems, and the bulk of community image tooling in 2026. If you want control — your own fine-tune, your own workflow, no content filter deciding your artistic direction — Flux is the default foundation.

Tradeoffs are real: local deployment demands a decent GPU and technical patience, and the Pro model is API-only, priced for commercial pipelines rather than casual play. Photorealism is excellent but carries a slightly clinical tone compared with Midjourney's aesthetic instincts.
