Recraft

Recraft is the image generator that took designers seriously, and it remains the only major tool built around vector output as a first-class citizen. Where every other generator produces pixels and leaves the designer to trace, Recraft generates genuine SVGs — icons, logos, illustrations in editable vector form — alongside raster generation from its own aesthetic model ('Red Panda'), which independent comparisons consistently rank at or near the top for style adherence and design-grade output. The difference is philosophical: Recraft optimizes for usable design assets, not impressive images.

The designer-centric feature set is deep: custom style training from a handful of reference images (your brand's illustration style becomes a reusable generator), style mixing, consistent icon sets generated in batches that actually match, background removal and generative upscaling, and a real canvas editor with layers, so refinement happens in place. In our tests with a design team, generating a 12-icon set in one consistent house style — the task that consumes an afternoon — took minutes, and the SVGs survived handoff to Illustrator cleanly.

Honest limits: photorealism trails Midjourney and Flux at the frontier; complex vector scenes still need cleanup for production use; and the free tier is a genuine trial rather than a working plan (Pro ~$12-24/month). For brand designers, product teams, and anyone whose output is icons, illustrations, and brand systems, Recraft is not an alternative to other generators — it is a different, better-fit tool entirely.
