Perplexity

Perplexity solves a specific problem well: getting a sourced, up-to-date answer instead of a plausible-sounding one from memory. Every response comes with numbered citations linking to the actual pages it pulled information from, and we found ourselves actually clicking through to verify sources far more with Perplexity than with a standard chatbot — the citations are genuinely inline and traceable, not just a vague 'based on my training data' disclaimer.

The 'Focus' modes (Academic, Writing, Reddit, YouTube, and others) let you narrow the search to a specific type of source, which is genuinely useful — Academic mode surfaces peer-reviewed papers for research questions, while Reddit mode is better for real-world opinions on products or experiences. The Pro plan's access to multiple underlying models (GPT-4, Claude, and others) for a single subscription is also a practical value proposition if you want model flexibility without juggling separate subscriptions.

Where it falls short is creative and open-ended tasks: because Perplexity is built around search-and-synthesize, asking it to write an original short story or brainstorm freely produces noticeably flatter results than ChatGPT or Claude, which aren't constrained by needing to ground every claim in a live source. It's also less useful for tasks with no clear 'answer to look up' — pure reasoning puzzles or code review benefit less from its search-first design. Perplexity is the clear choice when you need a quick, well-sourced answer to a factual question; for creative writing or deep code work, a dedicated chatbot is still the better tool.
