DeepSeek made its name by doing something few expected from a relatively new player: matching the reasoning quality of top-tier Western models at a fraction of the API cost, and open-sourcing the weights on top of that. We tested DeepSeek-V3 and the R1 reasoning model on a batch of multi-step math and logic problems, and the step-by-step reasoning traces it produces are genuinely useful for understanding *how* it reached an answer — not just the answer itself, which is valuable for debugging its mistakes when they happen.

The practical appeal for developers is the pricing: DeepSeek's API costs a small fraction of comparable OpenAI or Anthropic models for similar output quality, which matters a lot at scale (high-volume applications, batch processing, internal tools). The open-source release of the model weights also means teams with the infrastructure to do so can self-host it, avoiding API dependency entirely — an option ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini simply don't offer.

The trade-offs are real, though. Because DeepSeek is a Chinese company, some users and organizations have data-residency and privacy concerns about routing sensitive information through its hosted service (self-hosting avoids this, but adds infrastructure overhead). We also noticed the model is occasionally slower to respond during reasoning-heavy tasks compared to GPT-4o or Claude Sonnet, since it's actively 'thinking' through the steps. For cost-conscious teams doing high-volume text or code generation, or anyone wanting an open-weight alternative they can run themselves, DeepSeek is a genuinely strong option; for handling highly sensitive data via the hosted API, it's worth reading the privacy policy carefully first.
